Condolence Message from Oikotree

Oikotree joins the Salvadoran Lutheran Church and the global faith community in mourning the passing of Bishop Medardo Gómez Soto, a prophetic leader and tireless advocate for peace, justice, and human rights. His unwavering commitment to the Gospel and to the liberation of the oppressed made him a beacon of hope, not only in El Salvador but throughout Latin America and beyond.

As a contemporary of Archbishop Óscar Romero, Bishop Gómez stood courageously against injustice, even in the face of persecution, exile, and threats to his life. His ministry, deeply rooted in liberation theology, embodied the church’s mission to stand with the poor and marginalized, inspiring generations to continue the struggle for justice. His leadership and vision, particularly his efforts to support marginalized youth in contexts of violence, have left an indelible mark on the world.

We especially extend our deepest condolences to Rev. Arisbe Gomes, his daughter and a dedicated member of Oikotree’s Climate Justice Working Group. May she and the entire Gómez family find strength and solace in the profound impact of his legacy.

Bishop Medardo Gómez’s life was a testament to faith in action, and his memory will continue to guide and inspire all who seek peace with justice.
